About Me

My name is Georgeanna Vasquez and I am a senior at South Mountain High School. I have been in the dance program for three years, joining the advanced level my sophomore year. Before coming to South I was a member of Mountain Pointe High School's senior company dance program. I began dancing at a young age starting with competitive cheerleading. I first joined a dance studio when I was 10 years old where I began studying ballet, jazz, hip hop, tap, and acrobats. For about 4 years I participated in numerous competitions and annual performances and discovered a passion that will stick with me through the rest of my life. Dancing became a form of expression and a confidence builder for me. It was an outlet. Unfortunately sometime after beginning high school my excessive pursuit of dance was put on pause, and over the last four years I've only attended studio lessons sporadically. However, I've remained as involved as I could in other school related extra curricular activities. I have been a Varsity Spirit line member for three years and this year earned co-captain position. I've participated in our Dance Club since 2019 and was elected club president at the beginning of this school year. My high school dance journey has felt like a roller coaster at times as I've questioned the real importance of dance in relation to the rest of my life, and whether I've wasted years of my life or not. As I begin to finish my senior year I recognize that is hardly the case. Dancing has gotten me through times that I did not even notice. It has taught me things about myself and the strength and abilities I posses that I would have never been able to realize without it. Dance has taught me patience, persistence, and the power of pushing myself. I've developed self discipline and healthy habits that I'll carry with me and continue to improve. Most importantly dance has taught me to have trust in myself and I wouldn't trade that for the world. There truly is no better field for me to be in and my journey is still just beginning.

Future Goals

My plans after high school include pursuing a degree in business and possibly developing a career in real estate. I plan on pursuing dance professionally for at least the next 10 years and I am interested in owning my own dance studio later in life. A life long dream of mine is to be a professional cheerleader (NFL/NBA) so that also remains at the top of my goals list as I enter the next phase of my life.

My Takeaway

Overall, my participation in extra curricular activities and my dance courses have helped me develop discipline and effort qualities that I've been able to apply to the rest of my education. They have also provided me an outlet that pushes me to keep going and remain focused on my education. These courses have taught me the importance of hard work and dedication. I've learned I love being part of a team and that collaborative and competitive environments are ones that I thrive in. I will miss dancing at South Mountain but will cherish the memories and life skills and lessons that I've created.
